Two home gardens in Vancouver and one in Battle Ground have been selected winners of the Earth-friendly Garden Contest sponsored by Clark County Environmental Services and WSU Extension.

Fourteen entries were judged on environmentally friendly garden design and techniques such as on-site composting, water conservation and herbicide- and pesticide-free methods of weed and pest control. The entries showed that creating a beautiful yard and garden and caring for the earth can go hand-in-hand.

The top three winners will be awarded gift certificates worth $250, $155 and $85, respectively, from Shorty’s Nursery, Whole Foods and Backyard Bird Shop.

  • The first-place winners are Tabitha Reeder and Glenn Grossman, who live in Vancouver’s Shumway neighborhood.
  • The second-place winner is Sara Mae Elgi-Scott, who lives in the unincorporated Heritage neighborhood.
  • The third-place winner is Karen Plitt of Battle Ground.
  • Peggy Snoey of La Center received an honorable mention.

Thanks to everyone who helped make the Earth-friendly Garden Contest an opportunity for fun and learning.
