Vancouver, WA – After nearly a decade of planning, design and coordination, work is set to begin on the Salmon Creek Interchange Project, near the junction of Interstate 5 and Interstate 205 north of Vancouver.

The Board of County Commissioners on Wednesday awarded a $1.2 million contract to Coffman Excavation of Oregon City, Ore. The contractor will grade the site for a future Park & Ride lot to be used by C-Tran. The site is south of Northeast 139th Street at 10th Avenue, immediately east of the Fred Meyer store and Three Creeks Community Library.

Construction is expected to begin in early August. The Park & Ride work, which also includes installing underground utilities and building a retaining wall, is the first part of a huge project that will improve safety, decrease congestion and create jobs in a rapidly growing area near Washington State University Vancouver.

Overall, the Salmon Creek Interchange Project is expected to cost about $133 million, which will make it one of the biggest public works projects in Clark County in more than 20 years. Funding will come from state, federal and local sources, including $84.3 million from the 2003 Nickel gas tax package enacted by the state Legislature.

Clark County is partnering with the Washington State Department of Transportation. WSDOT will rebuild the Northeast 134th Street interchange on Interstate 5, extend Northeast 139th Street east toward Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center and make freeway ramp improvements. That work is expected to begin in late summer 2011.

The county will build road improvements on both sides of the interchange and relocate the existing Salmon Creek Park & Ride. That work is slated to begin in spring 2011.

The project’s first piece, grading for the new Park & Ride, must be done during dry weather and should be completed before the end of October. The earliest C-Tran would move to the new site would be summer or fall 2011.The existing Park & Ride site, along the east side of I-5 and north of Northeast 134th Street, will be used to collect and treat storm runoff.
