Clark and Cowlitz county commissioners appoint Ann Rivers to fill unexpired term of Republican Sen. Joseph Zarelli
Vancouver, WA – Commissioners from Clark and Cowlitz counties today appointed Republican Ann Rivers to represent the 18th Legislative District in the Washington Senate, naming her shortly after she resigned her House seat to seek the Senate appointment.
She was immediately sworn in by Clark County Superior Court Judge Robert Lewis.
Rivers, a La Center resident, will fill the unexpired term of former Sen. Joseph Zarelli, R-Ridgefield, who resigned May 31. She will run for the office in the November general election.
Rivers was elected to the 18th District’s House Position 1 in 2010, and has served on the Business and Financial Services, Transportation, Judiciary and Rules committees. She is president of a governmental and public affairs consulting firm, married and the mother of two.
She was selected over two other candidates whose names also were forwarded to the commissioners by Republican precinct committee officers in Clark and Cowlitz counties. The other candidates were Cindy Johnson, a Battle Ground Republican precinct officer, and Liz Pike, a former Camas City Council member and current candidate for the 18th District Position 2 House seat.
By law, the commissioners had 60 days to name a replacement or the appointment would fall to the governor.
Having selected Rivers, the commissioners must choose her replacement for the 18th District Position 1 House seat.
