County seeks comments on park code updates before Aug. 21 hearing
Vancouver, WA Clark County is gathering public comments on proposed changes to the park code.
Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation will review comments received by Aug. 16 to prepare a report for the Board of County Commissioners. The commissioners will hold a public hearing at 10 a.m., Aug. 21 on the sixth-floor of the Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin St.
If approved, changes would include:
Prohibiting tobacco use in designated parts of parks. A voluntary no-smoking policy has been in effect since 2005 in certain spots, including playgrounds, sports fields, shelters and restrooms. The updated code would prohibit all tobacco use in areas currently covered by the voluntary policy.
Revising the Park and Facility Use Permit process. The revised code language explains when a permit is needed and describes the application process.
Excluding repeat offenders from parks. Law enforcement would have an alternative to misdemeanor charges punishable by a fine and/or jail.
We have attempted to consolidate City of Vancouver and Clark County park codes as closely as possible while recognizing and respecting their differences, said Laura Hudson, parks and recreation director. This effort covers code that has not been updated in many years.
