Turn in leftover medication during Sept. 29 collection event
Vancouver, WA – County residents can safely dispose of all medications that are no longer needed during a free collection event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 29. It will be at the Fisher’s Landing Transit Center, 3510 S.E. 164th Ave.
A similar event at Clark College last April collected more than 800 pounds of unwanted medications.
The Sept. 29 collection is sponsored by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Clark County Sheriff's Office and Clark County Department of Environmental Services, in partnership with C-Tran and PREVENT! The Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Clark County.
State Sen. Ann Rivers, R-La Center, state Rep. Jim Moeller, D-Vancouver, Vancouver City Council members Jack Burkman and Bart Hansen, Vancouver City Manager Eric Holmes, and Clark County Sheriff’s Commander Steve Shea are scheduled to attend to underscore the importance of collecting unused medications.
Burgerville will support the event by distributing “Buy One, Get One Free” milkshake coupons to the first 200 people bringing in unwanted medication. The coupons can be redeemed at the Fisher’s Landing Burgerville, 16416 S.E. McGillivray Blvd.
Prescription drug abuse is a growing problem across the country. The 2010 Washington State Healthy Survey found that one in 10 high school seniors admitted misusing prescription drugs in the previous 30 days. More than 70 percent of youths who abuse prescription drugs get them from someone they know.
Proper drug disposal also is an environmental issue. Unused medications should not be flushed down the toilet or dumped down the drain.
