Town halls offer opportunity to speak out about all-mail balloting
Vancouver, WA – Three town halls will focus on the possibility of conducting all elections in Clark County entirely by mail ballot. Auditor Greg Kimsey has asked the county commissioners to approve a resolution calling for this change. The upcoming town halls provide an opportunity for citizens to find out more about the proposal, ask questions, and share their thoughts with the commissioners and with the auditor prior to the time that the commissioners formally consider this step.
The town halls, one in each commissioner’s district, are scheduled as follows:
• Monday, May 16, 7:30 – 9 p.m., Clark County Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin Street, Vancouver
• Wednesday, May 18, 7:30 – 9 p.m.,in the Rose Besserman Community Room, C-Tran Park & Ride, SE 164th Avenue and SE Cascade Park Drive, Vancouver
• Thursday, May 19, 7 – 8:30 p.m., Fire District 11 station, 21609 NE 72nd Avenue, Dollars Corner.
“My most important responsibility is to ensure that citizens have the highest level of confidence in our elections process,” said Kimsey. “It is very difficult for me to propose setting aside the tradition of polling place voting, but I believe that the best way to minimize mistakes is to make the system simpler. And conducting all elections entirely with mail ballots will accomplish this.”
County commissioners are expected to attend the town hall in their districts. “Voting is at the very heart of our democracy,” said Betty Sue Morris, Chair of the Board of Clark County Commissioners. “Along with issues of simplifying the system and saving taxpayer dollars, we need to hear what our citizens think about this proposal before we take any official action.”
