Did you know that people who live in neighborhoods where they can walk to nearby destinations tend to be healthier than people who live in areas where it's necessary to drive everywhere?
Communities that are designed to promote health often include features such as:
Neighborhood parks and tree-lined streets
Supermarkets or grocery stores with healthy food options
Destinations close enough to walk, bike, or take transit to
A well-connected street network
Sidewalks, bikeways, and transit routes
Public gathering places
Quality, affordable housing
Economic opportunity
Public Health is considering features such as these as it drafts a Health Element for Clark County's 2014 Comprehensive Growth Management Plan update. The plan will include policies and strategies for improving the long-term health of our community.
This effort, called Growing Healthier, is expected to last through 2011 and will involve meetings and events where you can learn more and help shape the way we plan for a healthy community.
