Approximately fifty representatives of the community served on various committees of the Camp Bonneville LRA to study and make recommendations for the reuse of Camp Bonneville. The LRA Reuse Planning Committee established seven guiding principles for planning which required the reuse plan to be self sustaining; locally focused and directed; an open process; considerate of impacts to the surrounding neighborhoods; addressed to overall community need; based on cooperation and consensus building; and environmentally sensitive.
In all, 250 members of the community offered input into the creation of a reuse plan for Camp Bonneville, which was drafted in 1998 and continues to evolve. The final reuse plan will be developed over the next several years with community involvement. Implementing the reuses must wait until final cleanup at the site is certified as complete by the Department of Ecology.
