Road construction and maintenance

Summer road maintenance

Starting in May, Public Works begins annual road surface treatments. Based on current funding levels, Clark County can resurface approximately 25 miles of residential roadways each year. Unfortunately, the need for surface treatment is greater than can be met by available funds. However, since the roadway system is evaluated annually, please watch for your roadway to appear on future resurfacing project lists.

Slurry seal

Slurry seal is a mixture of fine aggregate and emulsified asphalt that is mixed together and then applied to residential roadway surfaces. Slurry seal extends the life of existing asphalt, while sealing it from the harmful effects of water penetration and sun. This surface treatment typically lasts 3 - 7 years.

Road will be closed for 2 - 4 hours, depending on weather conditions, to allow curing before it can reopen to traffic.

Micro seal
Micro seal is similar to a slurry seal, only that it uses larger pieces of rock. Cement also can be added to the mixture. A micro seal dries faster than a slurry seal and is used on multilane roads, which allows traffic to pass on one lane while the other is being treated.

To further ease traffic disruptions, sand is shoveled onto intersections so vehicles can drive over the treated surface only minutes after it has been applied.

Chip seal

Chip seal is used to help seal the surface and prevent moisture from damaging roads. This surface treatment is typically applied between mid-August and late September, weather permitting.

Each area is completed within 1 - 3 days. Roads will not be closed, but you may experience temporary traffic delays. Watch for loose gravel and fresh oil signs and please drive slowly through work zones.

Asphalt overlay
This surface treatment is for structural reinforcement on arterial and collector roads in urban and rural areas. Surface defects and irregularities are repaired prior to adding a 2-3 inch layer of asphalt. There are significant driving delays during the overlay process.

Alternative treatments
Public Works this year will use a different form of road preservation in three urban neighborhoods during the summer of 2012.

The treatment will be done over a two-day period. On the first day, a chip seal will be applied using rubber pieces instead of crushed aggregate. On the second day, a slurry seal will be applied to reinforce the chip seal and to further preserve and protect the road.

The one exception is NW Fourth Avenue, from NW 99th Street north to NW 104th Street. Along that section, the roadway will be ground up, have cement added and then covered in a final asphalt overlay.

The following maps show the three areas that will receive treatment:
