Food and paper, please! The Save Organic Scraps Program (SOS) collects food and paper products from school cafeterias. The SOS program is now in 42 schools in the Vancouver and Evergreen School Districts and will expand to all school districts in Clark County. As food waste is collected and taken to a facility for composting, students are learning the importance of the 4 R's: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rot. Student Monitors at the school during lunch encourage leadership and responsibility as they monitor the containers for contamination. More students are also having the chance to make compost in their classroom and school gardens. Worm bins are found in several schools throughout the county. School gardens around the county are also helping teach students how composting their food scraps will create healthier soil; consequently, leading to healthier plants and animals.
