Volunteers collect water samples to be sent to the lab for analysis. |
In 2002, Clark County began a project to involve volunteers in collecting high quality stream health data to augment the county monitoring program.
In addition to gathering useful data, the project provides opportunities for citizens and trained Watershed Stewards to volunteer their time studying and evaluating the health of local streams.
Data collected by volunteers supports the monitoring objectives of the Clean Water Program and helps to identify possible problem areas. Sites are selected to increase the coverage of the Water Resources monitoring network.
The information gathered by volunteers is used for a variety of purposes:
- to estimate the current conditions of Clark County streams
- compare stream health to state water quality standards
- calculate water quality and biological integrity indices
- serve as a baseline for comparison in future studies
