Prevention Services are funded by the Division of Alcohol and Substance Abuse (DASA). Funds support a county Prevention Specialist position, and local alcohol, tobacco, and other drug prevention programs and activities.
Prevention focuses on delaying the onset of the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, and uses a risk/protective factor model as a framework to carry out and evaluate this work.
The Prevention Specialist is responsible for:
- A community needs assessment to determine the community's priority risk and protective factors, and the best strategies to address those factors.
- Distribution of DASA funds to support local prevention programs and activities that address the identified risk/protective factors;
- Evaluation of prevention programs.
- Preparing reports and grant applications.
- Collaboration with various community groups and agencies on alcohol and drug prevention activities.
- Providing Prevention information to individuals and organizations;
- Participation in statewide prevention planning initiatives.
